Do we need theatre?
That is the question thousands of professionals disappointed in theatre and millions of people who are tired of it are asking themselves.
What do we need it for?
In those years when the scene is so insignificant in comparison with the city squares and state lands, where the authentic tragedies of real life are being played.
What is it to us?
Gold-plated galleries and balconies in the theatre halls, velvet armchairs, dirty stage wings, well-polished actors’ voices, – or vice versa, something that might look apparently different: black boxes, stained with mud and blood, with a bunch of rabid naked bodies inside.
What is it able to tell us?
Everything!
Theatre can tell us everything.
How the gods dwell in heaven, and how prisoners languish in forgotten caves underground, and how passion can elevate us, and how love can ruin, and how no-one needs a good person in this world, and how deception reigns, and how people live in apartments, while children wither in refugee camps, and how they all have to return back to the desert, and how day after day we are forced to part with our beloveds, – theatre can tell everything.
The theatre has always been and it will remain forever.

And now, in those last fifty or seventy years, it is particularly necessary. Because if you take a look at all the public arts, you can immediately see that only theatre is giving us – a word from mouth to mouth, a glance from eye to eye, a gesture from hand to hand, and from body to body. It does not need any intermediary to work among human beings – it constitutes the most transparent side of light, it does not belong to either south, or north, or east, or west – oh no, it is the essence of light itself, shining from all four corners of the world, immediately recognizable by any person, whether hostile or friendly towards it.
And we need theatre that always remains different, we need theatre of many different kinds.
Still, I think that among all possible forms and shapes of theatre its archaic forms will now prove to be mostly in demand. Theatre of ritual forms should not be artificially opposed to that of “civilized” nations. Secular culture is now being more and more emasculated, so-called “cultural information” gradually replaces and pushes out simple entities, as well as our hope of eventually meeting them one day.
But I can see it clearly now: theatre is opening its doors widely. Free admission for all and everybody.
To hell with gadgets and computers – just go to the theatre, occupy whole rows in the stalls and in the galleries, listen to the word and look at living images! – it is theatre in front of you, do not neglect it and do not miss a chance to participate in it – perhaps the most precious chance we share in our vain and hurried lives.
We need every kind of theatre.
There is only one theatre which is surely not needed by anyone – I mean a theatre of political games, a theatre of a political “mousetraps”, a theatre of politicians, a futile theatre of politics. What we certainly do not need is a theatre of daily terror – whether individual or collective, what we do not need is the theatre of corpses and blood on the streets and squares, in the capitals or in the provinces, a phony theatre of clashes between religions or ethnic groups…

Avons-nous besoin du théâtre ?
Telle est la question que se pose des milliers de professionnels du théâtre déçus, ainsi que des millions lassés de celui-ci.
Pourquoi en avons-nous besoin ?
De nos jours, en comparaison avec les villes et les Etats où les tragédies de la vie réelle sont jouées chaque jour, la scène est devenue insignifiante.
Qu’est-ce que le théâtre pour nous ?
Les galeries et balcons plaqué-or des salles, les fauteuils en velours, les voix bien polies des acteurs, ou au contraire, quelque chose de différent: Des « black box », remplies de boue et de sang avec un tas de corps nus enragés à l’intérieur.
Qu’est-il en mesure de nous dire ?
Tout!
Le théâtre peut tout nous dire.
Comment les dieux demeurent au paradis, la façon dont les prisonniers croupissent dans des grottes oubliées sous terre, comment la passion peut nous pousser vers le haut, comment l’amour peut détruire, comment personne n’a besoin de quelqu’un bienveillant dans ce monde, comment règne la déception, comment certaines personnes habitent dans des appartements alors que des enfants se fanent dans des camps de réfugier, comment doivent-ils tous retourner dans le désert, et comment, jour après jour, nous sommes forcés de se séparer de nos bien-aimés, – Le théâtre peut tout nous dire.
Le théâtre a toujours été présent et le restera éternellement.
Et depuis les 50 à 70 dernières années, il est particulièrement nécessaire. En effet, si vous jetez un œil parmi tous les arts publics, nous pouvons constater que seul le théâtre nous transmet : un mot de bouche en bouche, un regard d’un œil à un autre, un geste de main en main, et de corps en corps.
Le théâtre n’a pas besoin d’intermédiaire pour travailler avec les êtres humains. Il constitue la partie la plus transparente de la lumière, il n’appartient ni au sud, ni au nord, ni a l’est ou a l’ouest – oh non, il est l’essence même de la lumière, brillant des quatre coins du monde, immédiatement reconnaissable par toute personne, qu’elle soit hostile ou amicale envers lui.
Et nous avons besoin de théâtre qui soit différent, sous toutes les formes.
Pourtant, je pense que, parmi toutes les formes de théâtre possibles, ses formes archaïques vont maintenant se révéler la principale demande.
Le théâtre sous ses formes rituelles ne doit pas être opposé artificiellement à celle des nations « civilisées ». La culture laïque est maintenant de plus en plus émasculée, et ce que l’on appelle ” l’information culturelle » remplace et évince progressivement les entités simples, ainsi que notre espoir de finalement les rencontrer un jour.
Mais je vois plus clairement aujourd’hui : Le théâtre ouvre largement ses portes. Entrée gratuite pour tous.
Au diable les gadgets et les ordinateurs – Allez au théâtre ! Occupez les rangs entiers des stands et galeries, écoutez et regardez les images vivantes ! – Le théâtre est à porté de main, ne le négligez pas et ne manquez pas la chance d’y participer – peut-être la chance la plus précieuse que nous partageons dans nos vies vaines et pressés.
Nous avons besoin de toutes les formes de théâtre.
Seule une forme de théâtre n’est surement pas nécessaire pour tout le monde – Le théâtre des jeux politiques, un théâtre de “souricière” politique, un théâtre de politiciens, un théâtre futile de politique. Ce que nous n’avons certainement pas besoin est un théâtre de la terreur quotidienne. – Que ce soit individuellement ou collectivement, ce dont nous n’avons pas besoin est le théâtre de cadavres et de sang dans les rues et sur les places publiques, dans les capitales ou dans les provinces, un théâtre hypocrite d’affrontements entre les religions où entre des groupes ethniques….

Нужен ли театр?
Спрашивают тысячи разочаровавшихся в театре профессионалов и миллионы уставших от него людей.
Зачем он нам?
В годы, когда сцена так ничтожна по сравнению с площадями городов и землями государств, на которых разыгрываются настоящие трагедии из подлинной жизни.
Что он нам?
Позолоченные ярусы, бархатные кресла, грязные кулисы, вымученные голоса или наоборот – черные боксы, заляпанные грязью и кровью с кучей взбесившихся голых тел.
Что он может сказать?
Всё!
Театр может сказать всё.
И как боги на небесах живут, и как заключённые в пещерах томятся, и как страсть возвышает, и как любовь губит, и как добрый человек не нужен, и как обман царствует, и как люди живут в квартирах, а дети – в лагерях для беженцев, и как в пустыню возвращаются, и как с любимыми расстаются, театр может сказать обо всем.
Театр был и останется навсегда.
И сейчас, в эти пятьдесят-семьдесят последующих лет, он особенно необходим. Потому что из всех публичных искусств только театр – это из уст в уста, из глаз в глаза, из рук в руки, и от тела – к телу. Ему не нужен посредник, между человеком и человеком – прозрачная сторона света, не юг, не север, не восток, не запад – сам по себе свет, светящийся со всех четырёх сторон, непосредственно узнаваемый всяким враждебным или дружественным человеком.
Театр нужен разный.
И из разных других и многих – архаичные формы театра будут востребованы прежде всего. Театр ритуальных форм не должен быть противопоставлен театру цивилизованных народов. Светская культура выхолащивается, “культурная информация” подменяет собою простые сущности и встречу с ними.
Театр открыт. Вход свободный.
К черту гаджеты и компьютеры – идите в театр, занимайте ряды в партере и на ярусах, вслушайтесь в слово и всмотритесь в живые образы – перед вами театр, не пренебрегайте им и не пропустите в своей торопливой жизни.
Театр нужен всякий.
И только один театр не нужен – это театр политических игр, театр политической мышеловки, театр политиков, театр политики. Театр ежедневного террора – личного и коллективного, театр трупов и театр крови на площадях и улицах, в столицах и в провинции, между религиями и этносами.
